Spring is in the air, Footy finals for AFL and NRL are a week away and the Racing Spring Carnival is almost upon us. Best time of the year! Accounting firms are also coming to the end of a very busy first quarter.

Growing Your Accounting Business Through Special Projects

Every year BRW reviews the Accounting profession in conjunction with it’s listing of the Top 100 Accounting Firms in Australia. The latest article highlighted the extraordinary growth the Accounting profession has experienced over the past 4 years and revealed that the remarkable growth achieved by as many as 40 of the firms, is a result of offering new lines of services and “Special Projects” to compliment their compliance workload.

Special Projects are known as additional opportunities which can be offered by Accountants without the need for a Financial Services Licence or an Authorised Representation of a Dealer Group. They include investment opportunities such as seed capital, information memorandum stage investments, initial public offerings, management and leveraged buy outs, property projects, boutique investment funds and many more!

Accounting firms throughout Australia are now finding their clients having more interest, asking more questions and looking for more investment options as an alternative method from the standard managed investment schemes. As a result, many firms are now turning to third party providers, to supply them with a stream of additional projects to offer their investment-hungry compliance clients. 

Not only is this proving to be a superb way for Accountants to provide a more holistic service to their clients and to differentiate themselves from competitors, but it is also an extremely effective method of increasing their bottom line without having to allow for considerable extra costs or capacity of Managers or employees.  

Offering special projects is seen as the ‘icing on the cake’. The healthy referral fees and commissions received are seen as a reward for the time and effort invested by the Accountant in building up the trusted relationship with their clients over the years. Once this relationship is formed, it is just a matter of sourcing projects which suit the individual client’s interests and which compliment their financial position.
